Fresh Sheet: October 7, 2015

It's the Last Market of 2015!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for a wonderful market season! This week is the last SWEFM of 2015, and we encourage you to stop by to wish our vendors, volunteers and buskers a happy winter. The market will be full of fresh produce, baking and crafts as always, so for the last time this year, spend some time outside with your family, friends and great food!

For market shopping tips, be sure to check out this page to ensure your market visit is everything it should be. And remember, please leave Fido at home- no dogs are allowed where food is being served!

  

The Sprouts Program for kids continues this week! Children between 4-12 will receive a $2 token every week to spend with our fruit and vegetable vendors. This week, our Sprouts recipe is Witch's Jack-O-Lantern Brew. You can pick up your copy of the recipe at the Sprouts table when you check in! For more information on the Sprouts Program, click here


The Southwest Edmonton Farmers' Market aims to enhance and support our vibrant community. Check out how to engage with your neighbours this week! 

The Oak Hills Community League will be in the Community Tent this week, with information about their community programming and some special fall treats for guests! 

Innovation Physical Therapy is pleased to join you one last time for the final Market of the season. Due to popular demand, our two green friends (the tiny one and the very large angry one) will be making their final visit to the Market. To wrap up this season they will also have one last draw for Market Patrons. Stop by their booth, feel free to ask some questions, and enter their draw for an Innovation Physio gift pack! "Love getting better!

Nutrition Tours will be available this week, courtesy of our wonderful nutrition student volunteers from the University of Alberta. Volunteers will be on site to answer your nutritional questions, take you on tours of the market and walk you through some of the topics that are explored in our Grab-and-Go nutritional pamphlets. When you're done, you can take home the pamphlet to help you eat healthier every day and quiz your friends on the things you've learned! The Grab-and-Go pamphlets are always available at the information tent for those who are looking for a quick fix of easy-to-read nutrition information, perfectly suited for farmers' market shopping!
 
AIG Produce will be bringing their fresh fruit including Gala, McIntosh, and Honeycrisp apples, as well as Bartlett pears. 
Steve and Dan's Fresh B.C. Fruit will be bringing a variety of fresh fruits from B.C. as well as their dehydrated apples and sparkling apple juice. 


 
Dargatz Family Farm has a variety of fresh produce, including kale, potatoes, patty pan squash and hot peppers. They also have some wonderful herb plants for sale.
Holden Colony will be bringing a variety of vegetables, eggs and preserves.
Riverbend Gardens will be back at market this week with cauliflower, kale, potatoes, beets, carrots, dill, fennel, broccoli and winter squash!
S4 Greenhouses will be bringing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and lettuce. Stop by to take a peek at this week's veggie mascots!

Jerky Jerky will be bringing a variety of dried jerky products. They always have samples to try, so be sure to say hello! 
Sunworks Farm, a certified organic and certified humane farm, will have their fresh chicken – wholes and all cuts along with their beef and pork cuts.  They will also have their wide variety of sausages (gluten, filler and chemical free) with a market special of purchase 9 get the 10th package free.  All meats are raised and processed on Sunworks' farm. You can order your Thanksgiving turkey this week!


Celebrate, Gluten Free is the perfect option for those with gluten sensitivities. She always has a special treat available, so be sure to stop by!
Confetti Sweets is our resident specialty cookie vendor at SWEFM and will be serving up their delicious varieties this week.  
European Cakes is back this week with her delicious macarons and baked goods.
Prairie Mill Baking Co. makes all of his bread right in our neck of the woods!
Whether you're looking for a fantastic cinnamon bun or the best sourdough in Edmonton, Owen has a loaf of bread with your name on it!

Sweet Stuff will be bringing pumpkin tarts, mini pumpkin pies, and pumpkin cupcakes along with her regular offerings. It's that time of year!
Treats Baked By Stephanie will be back this week with her delicious muffins and Honey Beer Bread. 
 
Cafe Bel-Air will be bringing fresh, handmade popsicles to market along with his wonderful handmade Mulled Cider. All of Cafe Bel-Air's popsicles are free of gluten and tree nuts, and they have vegan options available as well!
Chef India Catering is back this week with his Indian kebabs, wings and dips. He is having a huge sale on all of his items this week as a farewell to the season!
Cravings Gelato will be bringing their handmade gelato in malted chocolate, hazelnut, coconut, mango and strawberry mint as well as their choc/peanut butter gelato pies.
Melodi's Kitchen is our favourite Turkish food vendor and will be bringing all of their popular dishes for you to try. 
Mini Kitchen specializes in delicious Indian and Thai food. Their samosas and butter chicken are absolutely delicious!
Pink Taffeta Catering is back this week with Vegetable Lasagna, Meat Lasagna,  Basa with Fijian Curry, Pasta e Ceci, Pineapple Chicken, Sweet Curry Chicken, Beef Strogonoff, Paradise Chicke, and Beef Stir Fry.
Sweet and Spicy is back this week with their hand-blended spice mixes, sauces, salsas and jellies. 
Square 1 Coffee will be serving up fresh coffee and selling bags of coffee beans from craft roasters around Western Canada and United States.  
Tamiri Bites will be back with their delicious raw vegan treats. 
Theo's Greek Kouzina bringing their well-loved greek dips and treats to market this week.
Wilmar Farms will be back with their healthy hemp products, and have a 'Thank You SWEFM" sale running this week: 5% off on purchases over $50 and 10% off on purchases over $100!
 
Bully Food Truck will be serving up drool-worthy comfort food using fresh and local ingredients. The Bully Mac is a favourite among SWEFM Volunteers!
Dedo's Food Truck will be with us this week with their homestyle cuisine and shawarma.  
Fat Franks will be ready to serve you their delicious hot dogs and smokies with all the fixings!
Knosh Food Truck will be celebrating Oktoberfest this week, with Saurebraten meatballs with perogies in cream, Schnitzel and spaetzel with braised cabbage, Black forest scones with cherry cream, and Bee sting cake. 
La Poutine is back at SWEFM to close of the season with their hand-cut fries and authentic poutine. There's no better market to indulge!

Original Canadian Kettle Corn, a farmers' market staple, will be here this week satisfying all of your cravings for this summer favourite!
Yellowbird Cafe Truck will be back at SWEFM this week with their friendly smiles and delicious Asian fusion cuisine.

Carmen's Jewelry is joining us again this week with her leather handmade jewelry.    
Cheeky, the Cloth Diaper Company will be at market with their environmentally-friendly cloth diapers, wetbags and nursing pads. Their feature product this week is their all-natural "Cheeky Bum Spray" and you can pre-order their new line of adorable diaper prints!

Celebrate the Harvest by Sharing the Bounty!

This week marks our second and final Harvest Festival of the season, and the Edmonton Food Bank will be on site to help us share the best picks of the year with those in need. We encourage you to pick some of your garden produce or purchase fruit and vegetables from our vendors this week to donate to families that otherwise struggle to enjoy the benefits of fresh, healthy, local food. All families deserve to enjoy the taste of ultra-sweet garden carrots and the delight of a purple cauliflower, and this week is the perfect time to help share the bounty with all Edmontonians.

The Edmonton Food Bank will be in the Community Tent as part of our final Harvest Festival this week, collecting fresh food donations for those in need. As we approach the end of our market season on October 7, now is the time to finish off our summer preserves to prepare for snowy days! There are still dozens of different produce items at our market that can be canned, picked, dried, or turned into jams and jellies... All you need to do is ask your farmer! And for those of us who prefer the ready-made meals at market, ask our vendors over the next few weeks where they sell their products during the winter and how well they hold up to freezing!

Well, the weather has declared it's officially fall, and we are already thinking about big pots of warm squash soup, roasted vegetables and apple crumbles! Fall markets are the best way to stock up on the flavours of the harvest, as our local fruit and vegetable vendors are brining only the freshest fall produce to SWEFM every week. Our market is a bit more relaxed in the fall, so be sure to ask our vendors for their favourite way to prepare their bounty... you might just find your new favourite fall comfort food this week!

Back to School is the Time for Healthy Fuel!

This week is back-to-school for many SWEFM families, and we all know that can mean rushed mornings, tight budgets and frantically-packed lunches! This fall, make SWEFM part of your back-to-school routine by picking up healthy snacks and dinners that will fuel your favourite pupils for success. There are plenty of easy-to-grab snacks just waiting to be eaten, from fresh apples and plums to cherry tomatoes and whole-wheat cinnamon rolls. Of course, sometimes starting a new grade (or a new school!) calls for celebration, and our baked good vendors have the perfect treats for the occasion. 

To help celebrate healthy school lunches and make grocery shopping a bit easier this month, you can enter our #LocalLunch contest on Facebook and Twitter until the end of market on September 9. The Sprouts Program for kids continues this week! Children between 4-12 will receive a $2 token every week to spend with our fruit and vegetable vendors. This week, our Sprouts recipe is Stegosaurus' Spiky Back Salad. You can pick up your copy of the recipe at the Sprouts table when you check in! This week, the bouncy castle will be on site and No Excuses will be leading a family Zumba class between 6:00 and 6:45 (weather permitting).

Nutrition Tours will be available this week, courtesy of our wonderful nutrition student volunteers from the University of Alberta. Volunteers will be on site to answer your nutritional questions, take you on tours of the market and walk you through some of the topics that are explored in our Grab-and-Go nutritional pamphlets. When you're done, you can take home the pamphlet to help you eat healthier every day and quiz your friends on the things you've learned! The Grab-and-Go pamphlets are always available at the information tent for those who are looking for a quick fix of easy-to-read nutrition information, perfectly suited for farmers' market shopping!
 
AIG Produce will be bringing their fresh fruit including Gala, McIntosh, and Honeycrisp apples, as well as Bartlett pears. 
Red Apple B.C. Fruit will be bringing an assortment of fresh B.C. fruits, including berries, apples, and delicious stone fruits. 
Steve and Dan's Fresh B.C. Fruit will be bringing a variety of fresh fruits from B.C. as well as their dehydrated apples and sparkling apple juice. 


 
Dargatz Family Farm has a variety of fresh produce, including kale, potatoes, patty pan squash and hot peppers. They also have some wonderful herb plants for sale.
Holden Colony will be bringing a variety of vegetables, eggs and preserves.
Riverbend Gardens will be back at market this week with cauliflower, kale, potatoes, beets, carrots, dill, fennel, broccoli and corn!
S4 Greenhouses will be bringing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and lettuce. Stop by to take a peek at this week's veggie mascots!

Jerky Jerky will be bringing a variety of dried jerky products. They always have samples to try, so be sure to say hello! 
Sunworks Farm, a certified organic and certified humane farm, will have their fresh chicken – wholes and all cuts along with their beef and pork cuts.  They will also have their wide variety of sausages (gluten, filler and chemical free) with a market special of purchase 9 get the 10th package free.  All meats are raised and processed on Sunworks' farm.


Celebrate, Gluten Free is the perfect option for those with gluten sensitivities. She always has a special treat available, so be sure to stop by!
Confetti Sweets is our resident specialty cookie vendor at SWEFM and will be serving up their delicious varieties this week.  
European Cakes is joining us again with her bright and delicious macarons and other baked delights!
Prairie Mill Baking Co. makes all of his bread right in our neck of the woods!
Whether you're looking for a fantastic cinnamon bun or the best sourdough in Edmonton, Owen has a loaf of bread with your name on it!

Sweet Stuff will be bringing pumpkin tarts, mini pumpkin pies, and pumpkin cupcakes along with her regular offerings. It's that time of year!
 
Cafe Bel-Air will be bringing fresh, handmade popsicles to market, including Mango Lassi, Honeydew Raspberry Coulis, Blueberry Mint, Cherry Lemonade, Sweet N Spicy Pineapple Mango and Avocado Coconut Lime. All of Cafe Bel-Air's popsicles are free of gluten and tree nuts, and they have vegan options available as well!
Chef India Catering will be joining us again this week with his fantastic Indian wings, kebabs and dips. 
Cravings Gelato will be bringing their handmade gelato in malted chocolate, hazelnut, coconut, mango and strawberry mint as well as their choc/peanut butter gelato pies.
Melodi's Kitchen is our favourite Turkish food vendor and will be bringing all of their popular dishes for you to try. 
Mini Kitchen specializes in delicious Indian and Thai food. Their samosas and butter chicken are absolutely delicious!
Pink Taffeta Catering is back this week with Sweet Curry Chicken, Beef Stir Fry, lobster stuffed ravioli, gnocchi in Rose sauce, pineapple chicken, Fijian Tilapi with rice and Arancini with rose dipping sauce.
