Vendor Spotlight: Cakes by Oma

Lilia Yu is SWEFM's resident interviewer and recently chatted with one of our full time bakers, Thea from Cakes by Oma. Read below to learn more about this vendor and the great cakes she bakes!

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Thea, the owner of Cakes by Oma, for this week’s vendor spotlight.  Cakes by Oma started from Thea’s passion for baking, but Thea admits that it was also something to keep her recently retired husband out of her way!

Preparing for market day is a multi-day event for Thea.  She does all her preparation work on Sunday and Monday, which includes gathering all her ingredients.  She then begins baking at 3:30am on Tuesday until everything is finished baking.  On Wednesday, after all the cakes and loaves are carefully packaged, Thea and her husband start their one-and-a-half hour drive from their acreage to arrive at SWEFM!  Despite the long drive each week, Thea and her husband have commented that it is worth the drive every time because of the great people they meet on market day.

One of Thea’s most popular products is the Pina Colada Cake.  She says it’s something that most people say is unique and delicious.  Thea’s personal favourite is her lemon cake because it’s, “basic goodness!”

If you haven’t had a chance to try Cakes by Oma yet, be sure to stop by Thea’s stall this coming Wednesday.  She encourages her customers to try a sample of the cakes before buying an entire loaf, just to be sure you like the flavor.  Her cakes come in various sizes, including a mini cake size for $5 which is perfect if you want to try out a new flavor!  Everything at Cakes by Oma is baked fresh from quality ingredients.  The raspberries in her Chocolate Raspberry cake even come fresh from her own garden!

Even though this is Thea’s first year at SWEFM, the market has already made an impression on her.  She loves how well-organized the market is and appreciates all the wonderful people who run it!  Her favourite vendors at SWEFM include Louie from Theo’s Greek Kouzina and Skyler from Original Canadian Kettle Korn Ltd.

You can visit Cakes by Oma every week at the Southwest Edmonton Farmer's Market. She has recently added a Rhubarb Walnut Cake to her repertoire that is fresh tasting and delicious!
